ECHIDNE OF THE SNAKES asks a salient question...

ECHIDNE OF THE SNAKES:

"Today's Snarky Thought:
Would an alien from outer space die from laughing when it/she/he learned that the Catholic church decisions which ban women from the clergy and disapprove of any birth control for them are made by men in long dresses?"

My reply:

A little feminist revision history for y'all - in ancient times, the Queen represented sovereignty over the land. All authority flowed from her, and in order to have power a man had to become her consort. As men gained more power, they began to usurp the Queen as her representative. Early in the process, they had to don her garments to speak in her stead. Hence we have robed kings and priests. Just as many Goddess traditions are still practiced by people who don't know the origins of the practice, the ritual continues without the meaning.

How many Catholics know that they eat fish on Friday because of the cults that worshipped Aphrodite/Venus in Rome and Greece? Friday is her day, and the fish is symbolic of the yoni and of salacity. When Christianity destroyed the Roman Empire, the Pagans continued the practice, so a new reason had to be invented to explain it. The same with Easter, Samhain/Hallowe'en, Yuletide/Christmas, even Groundhog's Day/Candlemas/Brigid's Day.

The first pants were designed for women some where in Asia. One theory says they were for women working farms in China, another says they were for women kept in harems. Either way, they are designed for a body with no dangling parts. Why men ever started wearing them makes no sense to me.

Where I live in Kentucky, it is against the local religions for women to wear slacks or cut their hair and for men to have long hair. They don't know why they follow their rules, either.

Aliens haven't contacted us because they're still looking for intelligent life on this planet. So am I.

#1. That's cool, but I want to learn more and #2, "ancient times" is a little vague. Could you post what country and what time?

Also, until recently weren't pants limited to a fairly small part of the world. I had the impression that in ancient times, just about everyone wore robe - man or woman.

Typo boy- you're right, they are relatively new.

Matthew - I'm sorry I haven't posted an answer for you yet. I'm buried in research right now, but as soon as I have a specific reference for you, I'll post it here.
