New Frame: Last Hope for Life D & X

Deanna Zandt at Alternet's Echo Chamber has an important post called Talking points on the federal abortion ban. She's emphasizing that we need to be careful not to use anti-choice "frames" when discussing reproductive rights. In particular, we need not to use their frame for emergency procedures performed in the second or third trimester.

As you know, these procedures are exceedingly rare - only about 2,000 a year in a country of 220+ Million people - and it only used to save the life of the mother. The opposition uses it to chip away at reproductive freedom. Our opponents are relentless and we need to use every opportunity to get the focus off the fetus and get it on the life of the mother where it belongs.

I propose that we call these procedures Last Hope Dilation and Extractions, or Last Hope for life D & X s as well as Urgent Dilation and Extractions.

Please spread the word, and don't use the "p.b.a." frame.

This frame is just as disingenuous as the stupid (and untrue) term "Partial Birth Abortion." In general, the alternative to a D&X is only marginally more unsafe to the woman's LIFE. It is far more likely to damage her fertility.

If you use this frame, conservatives will say -- and rightly so -- that these procedures are hardly ever necessary as a life-saving measure. They are, however, a health and fertility saving measure. The larger incision required in a caesarean section for a hydrocephalic fetus is damaging to a woman and has a far longer recovery time.

I totally appreciate that we NEED a new frame. But we need one that can't be shot down.
