Pentagon Blocks Release of Abu Ghraib Images: Here's Why

Pentagon Blocks Release of Abu Ghraib Images: Here's Why:

"'The American public needs to understand we're talking about rape and murder here. We're not just talking about giving people a humiliating experience," Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina told reporters after Rumsfeld testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee. "We're talking about rape and murder -- and some very serious charges.""

"the Pentagon had refused to cooperate with a federal judge's order to release dozens of unseen photographs and videos from Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq by Saturday."

Let's see now, what's that word for when a government puts itself above the law? Oh, Yeah - FASCISM.

And what's that phrase for when you do things in violation of a Prisoner's rights under the Geneva Conventions? Oh, yeah - WAR CRIME.

there is a picture in capital city of Vietnam about the conflict with America with pictures of Jane Fonda and John Kerry. It has been said that if not for the anti-war movement in the press and the followers of the likes of Jane and John, the war in Vietnam would have ended in surrender by the north in early 1970. So actually the culprients in causing more deaths than nessesary in Vietnam was the antiwar press and the likes of Jane and John. Is this happening now... assisting the terrorist/insurgents and their following by the same folk and press by givng aid and comfort that their killing of inocent people will alow them victory?

No, that isn't happening now and it didn't happen then. Don't know how old you are, po_000, but I was alive and aware during the Viet Nam War era. The people who want to refight that war are crazy lunatic fringe people. Let me put it to you this way: the Communists had been fighting that war for decades before the US came and fought the US for nine years. The anti-war movement had no real significant support in the US until the last couple of years of that war. Which crazies are claiming the North would have surrendered in the early 1970s?

By the way, there was this really really enormous country right next to Viet Nam that was kind of supplying the North and helping them out. It's name was China (still is). There was a lot more to that war than what these crazies you cite have to say about it.

The Vietnam and Iraq wars are so very different, we shouldn't be talking about them in the same sentence. What is the same is that many well-meaning and misguided Amercians help the enemy.

We are in the Third World War right now. The enemy are terrorists (of a variety of types) and it started in the 1970s.

There are dozens (hundreds?) of terrorist attacks EVRY DAY - you only see the ones the MSM has time to show you.

Wake up. It's your future too.

Now I have to agree with guseee on this. Many well-meaning and misguided Americans are helping terrorism. FOr instance, when you get behind the wheel of that SUV that gets 12 mpg, you help the terrorists. When you oppose raising the CAFE standards which would make the USindependent of OPEC countries' oil, you help the terrorists. When you support the war in Iraq, which was not part of any terrorism network prior to the start of that war (read the Republican-led 9/11 Commission Report if you don't believe me), you help the terrorists. When you support a war that bankrupts the US, and support policies that lead to massive deficits in the US, like the policy of giving tax breaks to the wealthiest people and the new energy policy that gives massive amounts of money to the country's wealthiest and most profitable corporations, you help the terrorists (over-spending on war and ruining the domestic economy was what one of the thingts that brought down the Soviet Union). When you support a "war on Islam" and don't differentiate between Islam and extremism, you support the terrorists by giving ordinary Muslims, peaceful people, a reason to become terrorists. It just goes on and on like that.

You got it right, guseee.

However, the similarity to Viet Nam is that we have become engaged in another unwinnable and unnecessary war that only hurts the US in a multitude of ways and brings no benefit. We won't see any improvement in the oil situation because of it. Production in Iraq is down because of the war and will continue to be down. We won't see a friendly government in Iraq because of it. The new Iraq government is already looking to be friendly with Iran, and will become an Iranian satellite as soon as US troops withdraw. Nope, this one was a blunder from beginning to end, and in that way does resemble the Viet Nam adventure.

By the way, the US vet who flew helicopters in Viet Nam and with whom I played golf yesterday doesn't think Jane Fonda extended the war or caused any real problems for vets either. He thinks it was overstated and ridiculous.
