Radical Goddess Thealogy: PRIVATE Goddess SCHOOLS
Athana at Radical Goddess Thealogy speculating about PRIVATE Goddess SCHOOLS. This is a difficult one for me. In principle, I don't agree with private education. I think it is elitist and separatist, moving us in the wrong direction. I would much rather see us all focusing on making the public educational system one we can be proud of, which addresses the needs of the individual as well as society.
Adam Smith predicted that the form of education we now use and the specialization of functions in manufacturing would produce a human as stupid as a human can be. It's working. What the Right Wing never tells you is that Smith recommended that the government take action to prevent this from happening. With economics, like with their Bible, the Wing Nut chorus picks the lines it likes and ignores the items that serve the people and their general welfare.
Schools serve an important function within the framework of democracy. A cohesive society needs to have some common information and experience. Our kids also benefit from being exposed to different ethnicities, points of view and cultures. I'd prefer a standard secular education for kids that lasted about 5 hours a day, followed by 3 hours of private religious education.
The school day would begin and end with 15-30 minutes of yoga. Math, Sciences, English, Foreign Languages, computer science and technology and Human Behavior would make up the formal school day. Human Behavior would include information in psychology, sociology, anthropology, conflict resolution, history, sexuality and critical analysis of cultural values.
Religious education would cover Comparative Herstory/history, Comparative Religions, Alternative Medicine/Nutrition, Therapeutic Touch, Art/Drama and a basic knowledge of Goddess traditions and ritual. Students would work at their own pace, only advancing or graduating upon producing work at a pre-determined level that considers the individuals cognitive and behavioral abilities as well as career/life goals.
Yes, it would take a lot to set this up. And it's entirely possible that we might have to separate from Patriarchy to bring it down. The religious education is completely possible now if we'd develop the cirricula. There have been attempts in education to work with individual levels of progress, and those could easily be expanded to cover most subjects. It wouldn't cost as much as we're paying now, either. You could set it up with a laptop and an iPod per student, with no costs for books, no supplies except for art or presentations, or even buildings if the parents took turns hosting students in their houses.
We have the technology - the question is: Do we have the will to do it?

This is certainly an option, especially if the right succeeds in dismantling public education completely.
I especially like the idea of a paperless school. I think it would be possible to have your curriculum completely based online, allowing the individuals who sign up to choose their own hardware and place & time to hold class. This doesn't preclude the idea of the cooperative, but I do think that you could set up the framework with little more expense than you currently incur just by having a website.
If you decide to follow this route, I would be interested in helping. Check my webpage for an email contact.
I like this, Morgaine. If we set this up now, the patriarchy may learn from it. If we'd wait for them to set it up, we might never see it happen.
To the religious education component, how about adding something re: ethics, morality, and how to treat other people in various specific, difficult situations.
Very intriguing...
I'm sort of scrolling through the R & S blogroll of blogher, looking for someone writing towards alternatives. There is precious little I can contribute in response to the things you suggest, at least at this time, but you have given me much to think on with but a short posting, and have touched on things near and dear to me.
Merci!

Peregrin and Athana-
I'd love to set this up, if you'd like to help. I need to find someone who can set up the Wiki software on my server - I haven't been able to figure it out yet.
There is already a school system in Arizona that is paperless. The kids were all given an iBook at the beginning of the semester, pre-loaded with electronic versions of their text books.
If I can get a wiki up and running, we could make it a Goddess university, and invite many people to contribute to the content. Then it would be available to anyone that wants it for free.
Hello!
I'd really love to be kept abreast of any developments in this direction, and to volunteer any needed time or skills that I have.
The paperless school is something I've never considered in my daydream of a Goddess school...now I'm excited!
Please feel free to e-mail me at fallingup@yourclearwave.com.
Thank you so much!
Hi I saw your post regarding a Goddess school. I have the curriculum for a young children's school already and I ran schools for 20 years using for about 8 years, (designed up to 10 years old = we gotta start young)It is tried and true, based on nature and the 8 points of the year. When yall are ready give me a shout! Or sooner if you want to plan. I am writing a movie/TV series for children related to it.
