American Indians Battle Suicide, Poverty
"Nationwide figures show that American Indian teenagers commit suicide at three times the national rate; are involved in alcohol-related arrests at twice the national average, and die in alcohol-related incidents at 17 times the national average."
I have a strong belief that part of the reason for this is a contaminated food supply, which affects Native Americans more than people of European descent. I don't think we metabolize hormones and chemicals any better than we do alcohol.
And the sad thing is - no one cares. I mean, I care, but I can't do anything about it. I'm in the same boat that kids on the Res are. No money and no options. If the government steps in to help, it brings Christianity with it, which is a tragedy for Native peoples because it alienates us from our culture.

If the children are depressed what about their quality of life and their social and economic conditions? Is it a tribal environment that is wealthy, prosperous? Does tribal leadership care about all of their people? Youth? What goals created for youth? What is passed on to them about themselves? Is there any programs that directly reduce poverty so they have no thoughts on taking their life?
