The New York Times > Opinion > Op-Ed Columnist: Where's the Road Beef?

Maureen Dowd has a column out that makes me physically ill. She talks about the unabashed misogyny expressed by Harvard President Lawrence Summers and by Jose Conseco in his new book Juiced. From the steroid enhanced world of the major league to the rarified world of the Ivy league, from the comedy of Bill Maher and Robin Williams to the knife in the back from blogger Kevin Drum, this has been a bad week for women.

Why do I bother? Maybe the Lesbian Separatists have it right - why do we deal with the fucking creatures at all? So we can be sneered at as a "slump buster"? Or "roadbeef" ? A pox on every man who ever used those terms, and a plague on every man who ever participated in such vile, hateful behavior. You're thugs and rapists, every one of you. The bitter irony that you consider yourselves "heroes" only adds to the violence of your actions.

Shame on Lawrence Summers for denigrating the very women who are oppressed by his attitudes. Stop hypothesizing and start promoting, pal. Maybe somebody ought to replace you with a woman, since you aren't smart enough to realize that you are part of the problem. It's not about genetics or socialization, asshole, it's about access and privilege.

How do you ever trust men again after you've seen how hateful they are?! I'm done. I wrote a post this week about how I thought some women were being unreasonable with men. Fuck it. You can't be reasonable with your enemy. We can't be reasonable with them any more than a Democrat can be reasonable with a Neocon. These people don't care about us, they're selfish bigots.

I'm so angry, I can't stand it. I woke up with things I wanted to write about today- how the people in charge don't understand how technology works, so nothing is getting done - important things, to me, anyway. And yet I've spent my precious time reading and writing about the idiocy of men, and no doubt I'll spend the next couple of days fielding snide remarks from men who consider themselves feminists. Goddess help them, because I have no intention of being apologetic. Their attempts to justify their attitudes is only going to be fuel on the fire. You've been warned.

RANT over.

While it can be hard to believe at times, not all men are the enemy.

Everything you said is valid, and the articles you refer to are as upsetting to me as they are to others.

But not all men are like that. Most? Perhaps. But not all. When you begin judging a group on the actions of individuals, you give your enemy fodder for their cannons.

I'm right next to you opposing these morons, but please don't view me as one of them in your eyes.

with kindness and respect,

OK, since you seem to be Pagan, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. Maybe you are on my side. Now let me ask you this - have you posted on any of the male bloggers sites to let them know that they are being unfair to the women? In cases of oppression, if you don't speak up, you are complicit in the behavior. I'm not assuming you haven't done so, but I'm asking - Do you ever tell the other guys to knock it off?

You have put to me a very interesting question, and I'll answer it the best I can.

I don't tend to read the political blogs, so the short answer to your question is no, I have not. I enjoy reading pagan blogs, and have been following your blog for that reason. I follow as many male pagan blogs as I can find, although there are not many. Fortunately the few male bagan blogs I do follow have what appears to be sensible, level-headed individuals speaking who would be as appalled at the poor blogging behaviour you fight against as I am.

In real life, I do speak against injustice and bigotry, and don't stand by and allow such behavior to be unchallenged. I give each individual I meet the opportunity to be good and just, but if they show me they are not I do not meekly seek their approval through silence. This facet of my personality I cannot prove to you as a reply on a political blog might, so I can only give you my word that it is true.

The world is full of jerks, bigots, environmental rapists, and much, much worse. That is a sad fact of life. I grew up in a very bigoted household where everyone was judged by their skin color and gender, leaving me a very strong opponent to such behaviour. Whenever I am witness to a group (male or female) being judged on the basis of individuals, I speak up with what I hope is the voice of reason.

I deeply respect what you are doing, and see you as a force for good in this world. I can only hope this posting has not offended or angered you for that reason, and that you will continue to fight the individuals, without judging all men as being aligned with them.

with respect

OK, since you aren't active in the political blogosphere, I can see why I sound a little harsh. It sounds as if you do try to get along.

You have to look at the context I'm working within. These guys on the political blogs ignore us, marginalize us, then go around saying we aren't here. It's maddening to have your existence invalidated that way.

So don't take it personally - you don't have a dog in this fight. You keep reading and I'll keep writing.

Peace
