Betterhumans > Gel Acts like Liquid Condom
Topical application in women shown to inhibit HIV and herpes infection
Disease prevention: Like condoms, a new topical microbicide gel for women helps prevent disease, but without the need for partner compliance that can hinder condom use

A gel that acts like a liquid condom to block sexually transmitted diseases has proven to inhibit HIV and herpes infection when used by women.

Called PRO 2000 and being developed by Indevus Pharmaceuticals, Inc. of Lexington, Massachusetts, the gel is part of a class of products aimed at preventing sexually transmitted infections when applied topically.
It apparently doesn't do anything to prevent pregnancy, but this sounds like it could be a great way to stop the spread of disease. I like that it puts the control back in the woman's hands and apparently doesn't interfere with sensation as a condom might. Hopefully, it will also be a safe alternative for individuals with an allergy to latex. At the moment, they have none.

Sounds great to me, minus the fact that it won't help prevent pregnancy. But hopefully the woman is on the pill and has access to emergency contraceptives, and ultimately safe/legal abortion services if comes to that.
As a virgin, I have been looking at many contraceptives, as well as ways I can protect myself from STDs such as crabs and herpes. This is definitely as positive thing for women who are usually more likely to contract diseases during sex.
And as for condoms, nothing pisses me off more than hearing about how some men are such big babies and won't put one on. I always tell women to kick the fucker out of your bed or leave if he won't wrap it up. Women should think about their health, and value their health over unprotected sex,...and they should certainly value that over some immature asshole who won't put on a condom.
I hope this gel works and it's approved. But knowing the ultra-Conservative fascist vice-grip over the FDA, I'm sure, like the morning after pill, it will be a struggle to get it approved. After all, recreational sex that has no intention of producing children is evil to these wignuts. Oh, but they have no problem in handing out Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra?!! What infers recreational sex more than Viagra?!!
You know, this is such an important issue. I'm horrified when I find out women are having unprotected sex. Even if a woman is on the pill - and it is dangerous by itself - she needs to insist on use of latex condoms and that needs to be for every kind of sex.
Kofi Anan said recently that "AIDS has a woman's face" and he's right. Women have to stop trusting men to be faithful. I know that doesn't seem fair, but you are gambling with your life. The only hell worse than waiting for results of an HIV test is the hell of actually contracting it. I've watched too many people go through it. I have too many friends right now who are living (please, Goddess) with it. I've seen plenty of apparently nice guys who secretly see prostitutes and you never know if he's got a girl on the side or even worse, if he has sex "on the down low".
We're living in a time when your government cares more about its idealogy than about your life. You keep yelling at your friends if you love them. Sex is great, but it's not worth dying for when there are effective methods to protect you in every drug store.
And I don't care what they say, even GOP-approved, church-sanctioned sex isn't safe because conservatives are the most repressed freaks out there.
