XX Blog
There's a discussion in the blogosphere about Abortion. The problem is that it's men doing the discussing and as usual, they're too close to their dicks to make a rational decision. It's not about sex, necessarily, it's about their belief in the over arching power of the penis. One of the contributors at XX has a great response called "What Makes Something Human", to which I replied:
I think Rachel on FRIENDS said it best:“No Uterus, No Opinion.”
I think women have to decide whether holding a man accountable for impregnating us is worth our autonomy, because that is the deal Patriarchy has allowed. Personally, I’d prefer to have my autonomy, child support be damned. Now, this is not a perfect system, so we do need some recourse where men who lie and cheat and impregnate more than one woman at a time are concerned. However, basically, I think we need to recongnize that the first and essential “couple” was not Adam and Eve, but a mother and her child. I am my body, therefore I will decide whether I engage in sex, whether I will host a fetus or not, whether I choose to RISK MY LIFE to bring new life into the world or not. No man has any “right” to influence that decision, not now, not ever. A woman may choose to take a trusted partner’s opinion or wishes into account, but that’s her decision, not his entitlement. When does life begin? I believe that the standard for a child should be the same as the standard for an injured or ill adult, namely a functional brain. The brain of a fetus isn’t viable until about the 5th month. After that, I think there should be a compelling reason, like the life of the mother, to terminate. Since I am Here, My Right to Life trumps any claim by a being that cannot exist without me, as well as any that might live, but threatens my own survival. The whole abortion argument becomes simple if you consider woman an autonomous being. It only gets muddled if you consider both woman and child property.
I checked out the guys' blogs and I have to tell you, even the one trying to be sensitive, are still "reasoning" from a position of power over women. Yes, guys, Abortion Rights is all about the control of women. We claim the right to control our own bodies. It's that simple. You think we're "angry"? Damned straight we're angry. To paraphrase Mary Daly, after we understand our own history, what forgiveness can there be? Don't tell me that you aren't responsible for the oppression - you are part of it, you benefit from it right here, right now. You can't be sensitive enough or sorry enough to make up for the lot of women in the world. We do most of the work and have least of the money. It's the 21st century and we still have to fight for the most basic elements of autonomy - the simple right to control our own bodies.
This is a bad time to fuck with Feminists. We've just seen the courts victimize two young Sisters - a drugged teenager who's attackers premeditated and filmed her torture, and a young woman, still in her teens, whose most intimate information was illegally released to the press and the defense repeatedly. If there's any justice in this world, SHE will end up with the 4 Million dollar diamond Kobe bought for his
In the mean time, guys, stop thinking of us as property; stop identifying with the fetus to the extent that you can't make a rational decision. Donating a little DNA does not a "Daddy" make, and you can ensure your part in a kid's life by being a guy a woman would want in her life, though it's still her decision. If you love babies so much, go out and adopt a few. There are plenty of kids already in this world living in poverty, with no one to love them. There are lots of children who are unwanted, abused, and exploited. Fix that, then we'll chat about how we can make abortion unnecessary- which, incidentally, would be easier if you'd stop supporting an administration that discourages education about and access to birth control In the mean time, I'll make my own life and death decisions, thanks.
